ANAHEIM — The Fairmont Prep boys basketball team took advantage of an energetic home crowd as it defeated rival Pacifica Christian 62-35 in a San Joaquin League game Tuesday night.
The victory moved Fairmont Prep (13-10, 2-1) into a tie for first place with the Tritons (18-6, 2-1).
Huskies coach Joedy Gardner was glad to be back home as they played just their second game in their gym this season.
“I tell you, it’s nice to be home.” Gardner said. “This is only our second home game out of 22 games. And so we love being home. It makes us feel much more rejuvenated and (have) a little more urgency.”
Gardner added that “Pacifica Christian does a great job. Jeff’s (Berokoff) a great coach, their program is great. We go at each other every year. We end up playing each other in state championships and CIF championships. So it feels great because they’re a very good team.”
Fairmont Prep sophomore guard Jordan Ceballos finished with a game-high 17 points, including four 3-pointers, while David Abisogun scored 12 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots.
Ceballos scored 16 in the first half and was accurate from beyond the arc.
“He can really shoot it,” Gardner said.
The Huskies’ defense was the difference in the game, both with their strategy and physical attributes. They allowed only 12 points in the second and third quarter.
“We keyed on their 3-point shooting and became more physical with them from the get-go,” Gardner said. “And I think our physicality got them.
“We mix up our defenses, which makes it hard in high school for people to see what we’re doing. And because we have length and some athletes this year, you know, plus we made some shots. When we make shots, we’re dangerous.”
Abisogun, a 6-9 senior who is a Texas State commit, dominated the third quarter on both ends of the floor.
He had three dunks, including one coming off his steal at halfcourt. After a couple of dribbles, Abisogun used a crossover to get to the basket and finished with a two-handed slam.
“He is a well-rounded player,” Gardner said. “He leads us in rebounds, scoring, blocked shots and assists. Don’t know if you know that, all four categories.
“Because he gets doubled- and triple-teamed, he never forces it. He always kicks it to other people. Not only is David a good player, he’s going to Division I. And he’s going to do some good things as he’s got great character. But he’s also a leader, a captain. The guys follow him, they believe in him, and he believes in them. He’s been one of my favorite players to coach.”
Bith Jack, who is a 6-9 senior, chipped in with eight points for Fairmont Prep, Langston Ford added eight and Eric Gong had seven points.
Pacifica Christian will face Capistrano Valley Christian in its next league game.
The rematch between the Huskies and Tritons will take place Feb. 4, the regular-season finale.
The two teams met in the CIF-SS Division 2AA final last season with Fairmont Prep coming out on top.
“We’ll see them at their place,” Gardner said. “They’ve done this before. They’ll be ready for us. Last game of the year, and it’s their senior night. A lot going on that day and we’re excited to go in that environment.”
