Blue Lights follows a local police department in the Northern Irish capital, where they tackle everything from petty thefts to organised crime, all while maintaining relationships with the local community.
Dormer's character was shot and killed by a known local gangster while out on a routine patrol with officer Jen Robinson, played by Hannah McClean.
A beloved character, his death and legacy continued to impact the following two seasons.
The new season will also see the return of other familiar faces, including Hannah McClean, and Jonathan Harden as disgraced former Inspector Jonty, for an episode which is expected to tie-up unanswered questions from the past, including about Gerry's death.
Nick Lambon, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor, UK & Northern Ireland, said: "Gerry Cliff was such an integral part of series one so to have Richard Dormer back alongside our talented cast is a dream come true.
"We are over the moon to be back filming in Belfast, and with so many twists and turns in store, fans of Blue Lights have plenty to look forward to."
Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, co- creators and co-writers added: "We’re very excited to bring this series of Blue Lights to audiences.
Also set to return are Martin McCann as Stevie, Joanne Crawford as Helen McNally, Andi Osho as Sandra, Frank Blake as Shane, Abigail McGibbon as Tina, Dearbháile McKinney as Aisling and Andrea Irvine, who plays Nicola.
