In the visual posted Tuesday (Jan. 27) for A.G. Cook’s “Residue” — the third song to be released from The Moment‘s score — a wobbling synth soundtracks the British dance-pop star as she smokes a cigarette and struts inside a warehouse. The music intensifies as she walks around in the dark building, with flashes of dim lighting occasionally revealing that there are Charli clones all over.
The most climactic part of the visual, however, comes as the camera enters a room full of Charli replicas standing eerily still in front of a strobing screen before simultaneously breaking into dance. The screen displays messages such as “Don’t let it be over,” “I never go home” and “Dead horse.”
But the video’s most shocking part comes at the very end, when a Charli-like silhouette takes a drag from another cigarette. Then the lights brighten, revealing it to be Kylie Jenner.
The “Residue” song and video come three days ahead of the premiere of A24’s The Moment, a mockumentary centered on Charli’s 2024 Brat era. Cook — who worked on much of the Brat album — crafted the film’s score, which also features previously released singles “Offscreen” and “Dread.”
Jenner will appear in the film as well, as will Rosanna Arquette, Kate Berlant, Alexander Skarsgård and more. At the Sundance Film Festival a few days before “Residue” dropped, Charli spoke about how she exaggerated her own personality for her dramatized portrayal of herself in The Moment.
“I’m obviously quite related to my character, so I had a lot of inspiration to pull from,” she said during a panel about the film. “I would like to think I’m not as much of a nightmare as Charli in the film, but my real managers are in the audience and they probably know the true answer to that.”
“Right now, I am like the me in the film where I am wanting Brat to stop and pivot,” she continued on Jan. 23. “That is not because I don’t love it, it’s just because for all of us as artists, you want to challenge yourself and totally switch the creative soup that you are in and go and live in a different bowl for a while.”
