ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As Rochester digs out from the largest winter storm in at least eight years, city trucks are busy clearing snow and salting roads. But which roads does the City of Rochester prioritize?
News10NBC’s Emily Putnam looked into the city’s salting policy after a viewer asked about why side streets weren’t being salted. Rochester uses 20,000 tons of salt each winter, but not all streets receive treatment.
A city representative explained that salt is generally not applied to residential streets due to the sheer volume needed. Emily drove down Lake Avenue in Rochester and the roads looked clear, which means the salt has done its job. However, when turning onto Seneca Parkway, the situation changes. It looks like the road has not been salted or treated.
The City of Rochester said, “To control ice, salt is applied on main arterial streets and on some secondary roadways that have special features (e.g., streets with schools, bus routes, bridges, hills, etc.).”
