Coby White Finishes as Runner-Up for NBA’s East Player of the Week Award ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Coby White finally looks like Coby White again! The 6-foot-4 Chicago Bulls combo guard has had a rough first half of the season, missing 21 bouts mostly due to a lingering calf strain.

His 3-point shooting seemed to take the biggest hit in the offing. Prior to last week, the North Carolina product had been connecting on a low-for-him 31.3 percent shooting on 6.6 takes from distance.

But he fully turned things around last week.

The league at large noticed, and White finished as an also-ran to earn Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors for his efforts. Toronto Raptors guard Immanuel Quickley notched the crown. Toronto went 4-0 last week, while Quickley averaged 25.3 points on 61.1 percent field goal shooting.

Other nominees…West: Saddiq Bey (NOP), Kevin Durant (HOU), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (OKC), James Harden (LAC) and Naji Marshall (DAL)East: Bam Adebayo and Norman Powell (MIA), Jalen Duren (DET), Jalen Johnson (ATL), Donovan Mitchell (CLE) and Coby White (CHI) t.co/IIugTzFzZj

Last week, Coby White notched impressive averages of 23.8 points while slashing .468/.525/.889, 5.0 dimes, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.8 swipes. His leadership on the floor powered the Bulls to a spotless (4-0) week.

Miami Heat All-Star big man Bam Adebayo and rising shooting guard Norman Powell, Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren, Atlanta Hawks forward Jalen Johnson, and Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell were the other finalists for the award in the East.

Granted, these Player of the Week awards are a bit fluky and meaningless. But they can be a nice indicator that the league is attuned to certain players. Among the named players, Mitchell and West finalists Luka Doncic (who won his conference’s Player of the Week award), Kevin Durant, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander all might have a fringe shot at MVP consideration.

Coby White Boosts His Trade Value

Despite still being just 25, Coby White is the longest-tenured Bull. He has been floated in trade rumors for months. Chicago has a bit of a guard surplus, with four quality, ball-dominant backcourt pieces rostered in White, Josh Giddey, Ayo Dosunmu, and Tre Jones. Kevin Huerter and Isaac Okoro can also play at the shooting guard spot.

White and Dosunmu are both on expiring deals. The two guards and Jones have been floated as potential trade fits for the Minnesota Timberwolves, who could certainly use a bit more playmaking and scoring next to soon-to-be-four-time All-Star shooting guard Anthony Edwards — all due respect to off-guard Donte DiVincenzo.

The standout recent play of White will only endear him to potential Bulls trade partners. The fact that his money is short-term may limit exactly what Chicago can get back. Arturas Karnisovas is allegedly striving to receive an unprotected first-rounder back in return for White, which feels fairly unrealistic.

Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that the league anticipates Chicago will offload either Dosunmu or White by next week’s Feb. 5 trade deadline.
