ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As the region works to unbury from the biggest snowstorm in years, the Rochester Fire Department is making sure fire hydrants are cleared.
The fire department says it encourages crews to proactively clear hydrants within their districts when possible, which happens in a few different ways.
After emergency responses
Most commonly, crews will clear fire hydrants during or shortly after an emergency response. RFD says during most responses, the driver will stay outside to guide incoming agencies and circulate water in the fire pump to prevent freezing.
RFD says the driver might take time to clear out the snow from a nearby hydrant. If the driver isn’t able to, RFD says the company will address hydrants once they are back in service, such as clearing hydrants along the route back to the firehouse.
Setting aside time
RFD says time may be set aside between calls to dig out hydrants on certain streets. The department says these might be on main roads or narrow streets that can become easily congested with snow and impact fire operations.
During storms or freezing temperatures
Lastly, during continuous storms, and multiple freezing and/ or thaw cycles, RFD says department leadership might formally assign people to clear fire hydrants within districts.
How to help
Although the fire department tries to clear fire hydrants whenever possible, RFD encourages people to help out by clearing hydrants near their homes. The department says it “benefits everyone and allows the Rochester Fire Department to operate more quickly and efficiently during emergencies.”
The Cheshire Fire Department advises people to keep a three-foot clearance around fire hydrants. The department also advised people to never use an open flame to thaw frozen water pipes.
