SANTA ANA – Having lost its three Trinity League games by an average margin of 21 points a loss, Servite’s boys basketball team was hungry for a win.
The Friars got that win impressively Saturday in a 69-56 victory over Los Alamitos in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High.
Servite improved to 18-8 overall. The Friars, No. 12 in The Orange County Top 25, are 0-3 in the six-team Trinity League with two league games remaining, at home against JSerra on Wednesday and at St. John Bosco on Friday. The Trinity League then has a league tournament, structured much like conference tournaments in college basketball.
Los Alamitos is 15-9. The Griffins, CIF Southern Section Division 1 champions last season, are 6-2 in the seven-team Sunset League. Los Alamitos, No. 5 in the county rankings, are in second place, behind 9-0 Corona del Mar.
The Griffins’ remaining games are league games. They are at Fountain Valley on Wednesday, at home against Newport Harbor on Friday and at home against Edison on Feb. 2.
Servite freshman guard Tariq Johnson scored 25 points with four assists. Johnson was 10 for 14 on all shots and 2 for 4 on 3-point shots.
Friars senior forward Jake Schutt scored 14 points with 15 rebounds and four assists. Servite freshman guard Carlos Galvan scored 14 points.
Sophomore guard Riley Bowers led Los Alamitos with 15 points.
Servite shot 53 percent from the floor. Los Alamitos shot 39 percent from the floor. The Griffins committed 30 turnovers.
Servite first-year coach Matt Kanne said Saturday’s game against Los Alamitos was an opportunity to boost the team’s confidence.
“The Trinity League is a beast,” Kanne said. “To have this game against a strong team like Los Al was good for us. It was nice to be out of the league, to take the pressure off and just go out and play and show how we’re able to play.”
Johnson’s 3-pointer in the final minute of the first quarter enabled the Friars to take a 19-17 lead into the second quarter. They outscored Los Alamitos 16-3 in the second quarter to grow the lead to 35-20 at halftime.
Servite’s lead was as big as 24 points in the third quarter. Midway through the third quarter Los Alamitos coach Nathan Berger pulled the Griffins starters out of the game. They had played a Sunset League game the night before – a 64-57 win over Huntington Beach – and on the previous Wednesday lost to league-leading Corona del Mar in what might have been an emotionally-taxing game.
Los Alamitos is a lock to get a CIF Southern Section playoff berth.
Servite’s status is uncertain. The top three finishers in a six-team like the Trinity League are automatic qualifiers for the playoffs. A strong showing in the Trinity League tournament could help, and perhaps Servite will be placed in a division that would have one or more berths for at-large teams.
In the CIF-SS computer rankings Los Alamitos is No. 19 among the section’s 516 boys basketball teams. Servite is No. 42.
Schutt said the Friars were primed and ready for Saturday’s game.
“We had two great practices before this game,” Schutt said. “We need to take this mentality into our league games. If we move the ball around on offense like we did today against the Trinity League teams, we can compete.”
Saturday’s set of nine games concluded the second and final day of the 31st Nike Extravaganza.
