A goal with the last kick of the game from Amine Adli handed Liverpool their first loss of 2026. Check out all the best facts and Opta data in our Bournemouth vs Liverpool stats page.
Amine Adli scored in the last minute of stoppage time to win a five-goal thriller for Bournemouth against Liverpool, with their 3-2 victory ending the Reds’ 13-game unbeaten run.
The hosts went 2-0 ahead after just 33 minutes, with Evanilson and Álex Jiménez finding the net, though Virgil van Dijk – who had a mixed evening – pulled one back just before the break from a corner.
Dominik Szoboszlai equalised in the second half with another pin-point free-kick, only for Adli to scramble home the winner following a long throw right at the death.
Liverpool had been on a 13-game unbeaten run in all competitions prior to this game, though in reality it was difficult to remember many if any convincing performances during that run aside from a couple of impressive away wins in the Champions League, so this defeat to a buoyant Bournemouth will have surprised very few.
Arne Slot made just one change from the team that won 3-0 in Marseille on Wednesday, with Cody Gakpo replacing Hugo Ekitiké.
Liverpool started strongly, but a mistake from Van Dijk saw them fall behind. The Dutchman failed to deal with a ball over the top, allowing Alex Scott to pull back for Evanilson to slam past Alisson from close range.
To rub salt into the wounds, Joe Gomez collided with his goalkeeper, forcing him off with an injury. It inexplicably took Liverpool seven minutes to make a change, and his team paid the price.
With the Reds struggling to get Wataru Endo on and having been down to 10 men for some time, Bournemouth took advantage. James Hill played a ball through to Jiménez down the right side of the Liverpool penalty, with the narrowly-onside Spaniard finishing well from an angle to double the hosts’ lead.
The visitors were able to halve the deficit just before half-time when Van Dijk rose to nod in a Szoboszlai corner at the near post. It was only their second goal scored from a corner in the Premier League this season, while only West Ham (12) have conceded more than Bournemouth (9).
Somewhat surprisingly given he has been strongly linked with a move to Tottenham, Andy Robertson came on for Liverpool at half-time for Milos Kerkez, who was arguably at fault for his former club’s second goal when he lost the run of Jiménez.
Slot turned to Ekitiké and Curtis Jones from the bench on the hour mark, and that seemed to give the visitors a bit of a boost. Ryan Gravenberch fired just wide in the 66th minute as Bournemouth tried to hold onto their lead.
Liverpool had enjoyed 80% possession in the first 30 minutes of the second half but not had a single shot on target, until they equalised.
Bournemouth took lessons from Szoboszlai’s free-kick under the wall in Marseille in midweek, so had a player lie down behind their wall as the Hungarian lined up a free-kick. Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah simply circumvented that when the latter rolled the ball to the right and the former unleashed a fierce shot around the wall and into the bottom left corner of Djordje Petrovic’s goal.
No Premier League player has scored more goals from outside the box in all competitions this season than Szoboszlai (5, level with Phil Foden).
Evanilson had a superb chance to restore Bournemouth’s lead in the 84th minute when the Cherries countered effectively, but the Brazilian steered his effort wide after being played in on goal.
Florian Wirtz steered a shot just wide of the post moments later as the game became hectic, with both teams chasing a winner, and it was the hosts who grabbed it.
A long throw was sent into the box in the 95th minute and, not for the first time this season, Liverpool failed to clear it and cost them the game. The scramble ended with Adli steering the ball under Alisson’s arm from an angle to delight the home fans.
Liverpool conceded a 90th-minute winner for the third time in the Premier League this season – their most ever in a single campaign in the competition – and it was suitable revenge for their opponents, who were on the end of a late winner themselves at Anfield in the reverse fixture way back in August.
Andoni Iraola will hope his players can show this spirit again, having seemingly turned their poor form around. Bournemouth have now won two of their last three league games (D1), as many as their previous 16 beforehand (W2 D7 L7).
