ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Bitter cold temperatures didn’t stop the Rochester community from showing up to support local students Saturday morning.
Fairy Godmothers of Rochester held a dress drive at Marketplace Mall, inside the former Dick’s Sporting Goods space on West Henrietta Road. The drive, held from 10 a.m. to noon, collected gently used prom dresses to be donated to students in need ahead of prom season.
Despite the cold, community members came out to help.
“We are so grateful for the community to come out in this bitter cold weather,” said Ami Salzman, director of Fairy Godmothers of Rochester. “Look what kind of community we have here in Rochester — I’m so impressed.”
Salzman said the mission behind the dress drive goes beyond clothing, focusing on confidence and inclusion for young people who may be facing difficult circumstances.
“When you see a young lady who’s having a tough time for whatever reason, and she can come in and get head-to-toe dressed for prom,” Salzman said. “It brings happy tears to my eyes — and to those of my volunteers.”
Fairy Godmothers making hundreds of prom dresses available to area students
Fairy Godmothers of Rochester provides free prom dresses, accessories, and styling to students who otherwise might not be able to afford them. With prom season approaching in March, the organization says it is also looking for additional volunteers to help prepare for upcoming events.
