Greeley’s LINC to host portrayal of ‘quick-shooting mail carrier’ for Black History Month ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

Greeley will host a portrayal next month of a Black woman who had a heavy hand in shaping the 19th-century frontier.

The Black History Live tour, presented by Colorado Humanities, will make a stop Saturday, Feb. 2 at the LINC Library, 501 8th Ave. The event, featuring a portrayal of Mary Fields by scholar/actor Becky Stone, will run from noon to 2 p.m., according to a Colorado Humanities news release.

Fields — also known as “Stagecoach Mary” — was freed from slavery after the Civil War and joined the Ursuline Convent of the Sacred Heart in Toledo, Ohio, before being kicked out for pointing a gun at the convent’s janitor during an argument.

She later became the first Black, female mail carrier, delivering by stagecoach and protecting the mail from thieves and bandits.

“The hard-drinking, quick-shooting mail carrier sported two guns, men’s clothes and a bad attitude,” according to History.com.

The portrayal will be performed in Chautauqua format — a first-person dramatization of a historical figure. The monologue typically lasts 40 minutes, followed by a 20-minute Q&A, first in character, then out of character as a scholar and performer, the release states.

Other dates later in the month will feature a portrayal of York by scholar/actor Marvin Jefferson. Enslaved by William Clark, York was the only Black member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and is believed to be the first Black man to cross the continent and see the Pacific Ocean. York believed his role in the expedition would grant him his freedom, but Clark refused once the journey was complete.

Colorado Humanities’ Black History Live tour, now in its 17th year, is an annual recognition each February of significant contributions African Americans have made and continue to make to art, culture, economic development, human rights, medicine, public services, politics and sports, according to the release.
