ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Despite the frigid temperatures, mail carriers are still out braving the cold. USPS rarely shuts down due to weather, and mail carriers are trained for various conditions, with safety being a top priority.
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic spoke with a letter carrier with USPS, who’s been with the agency for about four years now. Nathan Jessmer said he enjoys his job, but safety is his main concern, especially in the coming days.
“You got to check the ice. The main thing is just making sure you don’t fall – slip out here,” Jessmer said. “I got good customers over here. They usually shovel for me and take care of me, they give me hot chocolate and stuff if I need it,” he added.
Mark Lawrence, a spokesperson for USPS, said if a mailbox isn’t safe to access, carriers can hold onto the mail.
“They’ll bring it out the next day in hopes that, you know, the customer had a chance to clear that snow or resolve what the issue is. And if the problem stays consistent, they’ll place the individual or the property on hold,” Lawrence said.
USPS is asking customers to keep up with shoveling and salting as needed, especially this weekend with heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures anticipated.
In cases of extreme weather, Lawrence said they may stop delivering until it’s safe. “Those treacherous situations with a slip can cause injury. Then it’s downtime for our carriers, which impacts other customers on the route, not getting their mail in a timely manner,” Lawrence added.
