ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Attorney General Letitia James issued an alert to consumers and businesses on price gouging on Friday. This stems from the expected winter storm to hit the state, for which Governor Hochul called for a state of emergency.
The state’s price gouging law curbs businesses from taking advantage of people, specifically by selling essential goods or services at unnecessarily high prices during times of market disruptions and emergencies.
The law covers vendors, suppliers, and retailers who sell items such as food, water, gas, generators, and batteries, among other supplies, at spiked prices in accordance with an emergency.
“New Yorkers preparing for this storm should not have to face higher costs for the essentials they need to stay safe. Our price gouging laws are clear, and my office will not hesitate to hold accountable those who try to take advantage of this emergency by raising their prices,” said Attorney General James.
The Attorney General’s Office tells people to report specific items, dates, and places where they saw an increase, and to provide copies of receipts for evidence.
