She said the Department of Transportation will pre-treat roads ahead of the storm’s arrival and that the state has enough salt reserves. You can read more here.
What causes windchill?
On Friday morning, First Alert Meteorologist Nate Morris reported live from Brighton on the wind chill values. As he explained, windchill is how cold it is outside when you factor in heat loss from the wind.
When there’s no wind outside, your body will still lose heat through convection, but there will be a layer of heat around you. However, if there’s a strong wind gust, it will blow away that layer of convection around you and speed up the heat loss process. Calculating the windchill involved a mathematical formula, but the bottom line is that wind gusts make it feel colder and can increase the risk of frostbite for exposed skin. See the full story here.
