LOS ALAMITOS — The Los Alamitos girls basketball team kept its unblemished league record intact with a commanding victory over Corona del Mar, 65-33, in a Sunset League game Thursday at Los Alamitos High School.
With five league games remaining, the first-place Griffins (16-6, 7-0), who are ranked No. 19 in Orange County, hold a comfortable lead over the rest of the league.
The Sea Kings (11-13, 5-3) are in a three-way tie for second with Marina and Huntington Beach.
Los Alamitos coach Maya De Anda made the 3-point shot a priority on nearly every possession and that strategy proved successful, as the Griffins hit nine 3-pointers by halftime and finished with 13 in the game.
“A lot of teams are zoning us because we’re guard heavy,” De Anda said. “But when they zone us, we can shoot outside. And we’re just starting to come into our own now. It really clicked, which is so good for us leading into (the CIF SS playoffs).”
Los Alamitos senior Maddie Norberg scored all of her game-high 15 points on five 3-pointers.
Sophomore Maile Heng scored 13 points and sophomore Sydney Asumbrado and senior Lexi Kyriakos scored eight each for the Griffins.
“I was able to get my feet set and just being confident in my shot and knowing that my teammates would pass it to me,” Norberg said. “I was able to get the shot up quick and easy and it fell in every time.”
De Anda also got all 12 players for the Griffins into the game and all but one got into the scoring column.
“Yeah, I got everybody in,” De Anda said. “It’s really important to me. They work hard in practice. We want to get everybody in every time we can.”
Los Alamitos more than doubled its point total from its first matchup against Corona del Mar on Jan. 6 when the Griffins won 28-20.
“I had just gotten one of my best kids back,” De Anda said of the team’s first matchup. “We were not gelling at all, but defense won that game. And it won this game too, but our offense sure made it easier.”
Sawyer Blumenkranz led Corona del Mar with 11 points.
