Chicagoans brace for sub-zero temps as officials warn to take precautions ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Some Chicagoans are ready for the brutally cold temperatures set to move into the area overnight Thursday, saying they have been through this before.

“I was here for the last polar vortex when we had the minus-40 wind chills so I also went outside for that one,” said Danny Rodriguez, from Chicago. “It was an experience, that’s all I’m gonna say — I’m ready.”

The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications is working closely with the National Weather Service and other agencies like the Chicago Fire Department to monitor any changes as the frigid air hits the area around midnight.

“Our primary message is to please limit your time outside, it only takes upwards of ten to 15 minutes for exposed skin to start seeing symptoms of frostbite, so really when it comes to both you and your pets try to limit your time outside as much as possible,” said Matt Doughtie, Manager of Chicago’s OEMC.

City officials are urging people to take extra precautions and to be prepared.

“This is a good time for everybody to stock up on groceries, including non-perishable food making sure that your medication are refilled and to make sure those batteries are working in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors,” Doughtie said.

If you use a space heater, the Chicago Fire Department said its best to keep it three feet away from anything that could ignite. Officials also remind people to keep their faucet dripping to prevent frozen pipes.

ComEd is offering some energy cost saving measures in the extreme cold.

“Make sure that their vents aren’t covered by furniture or rugs that that the warm air could flow freely through the home they can do weather stripping,” said John Schoen, ComED spokesperson. “They should try to look at their thermostat and whatever they’re comfortable with if they want to save money, turn their thermostat down a little bit.”

ComEd said it will have enhanced staffing through the weekend. Crews are ready to deploy in case of any power outages.

“We postponed any non-critical work we’ve also gotten equipment like generators in place so if for some reason there was a larger outage we could get people power quickly so they could feel safe in their homes,” he said.

The city has activated more than 200 facilities for warming centers during the week and through the weekend. Officials said if you can remember to check on the vulnerable and your neighbors.
