First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert for cold Friday & widespread snow Sunday – Monday ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We have a couple of VERY busy weather days ahead of us Friday and into the weekend. First is the cold arriving on Friday with an arctic front. Temperatures will actually be “least cold” first thing Friday morning. Air temperatures in the lower teens will drop into the single digits by lunchtime and into the afternoon/evening hours. At the same time, winds will be increasing. Wind chills will start off 0 to -5°, then drop to -10 to -20° by afternoon and evening. This is the kind of cold that can become dangerous if you’re out in it too long, and not dressed properly. Make sure if you need to be outdoors for an extended period of time, you need to make sure you dress in layers and cover up exposed skin. Wind chills remain well below zero into early Saturday morning, but as the wind eases, so does the deepest cold.

Saturday will be our coldest day, with highs in the single digits, but it’ll be our quietest day, with some light lake flakes near Lake Ontario, but some sun elsewhere. That all begins to change on Sunday, with a large storm system spread snow into the area from south to north starting in the morning. It is still early, but confidence is growing in a sizeable snowfall for the entire Rochester and Finger Lakes region. The snow will be steadiest and heaviest midday Sunday through Monday morning, before tapering. An early forecast calls for 8-12″ area-wide, with lake enhancement adding more for our northern counties. There is the likelihood that these numbers may be increasing as we get closer to the event, and new data continues to come in. Bottom line – expect snow covered roads, tough travel at times, and potential school and business closings Monday morning. Check back every few hours for updates, as new data comes in and we update the forecast.

Widespread snow tapers Monday morning, with a few additional inches of lake effect snow through the day Monday. After we wind that event down, it’ll remain very cold with frequent lake snow showers through much of the rest of next week.
