The Associated Press has named Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson as one of its five finalists for NFL Coach of the Year honors.
In his first season with the Bears, Johnson led the team to an 11-6 record and their first NFC North title in seven years.
Johnson, who became well-known as an offensive guru with the Detroit Lions, helped the Bears to be one of the league’s most explosive offenses, averaging 369.2 yards per game and 25.9 points per contest.
Quarterback Caleb Williams threw for over 3,900 yards and became the Bears’ all-time single-season leader in passing yards, and he also became one of just a handful of Bears quarterbacks to throw for 25 or more touchdowns in a single season.
Johnson also led the Bears to two wins against the Green Bay Packers, including just the second-ever postseason win for Chicago over their hated rivals.
Whether or not Johnson won the award will be announced at the NFL Honors on Thursday, February 5 during the leadup to Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California.
Also named finalists were Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen, Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.
The last Bears head coach to win that honor was Matt Nagy, who did so as he led the team to a division title in 2018.
