The 10% Club: Opta’s Best Under-the-Radar FPL Picks for Gameweek 23 ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

Who are the players to add to your Fantasy Premier League team for Gameweek 23 of 2025-26? We assess the Opta data to reveal our top under-the-radar picks.

These are strange days for the Premier League. Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham are all winless in four, while Wolves’ total of six points makes them the fifth best team in the division in that same period. It might be time to make some changes to your Fantasy Premier League team.

We’ve crunched the Opta data to identify five players you absolutely must consider transferring into your team, despite them currently being picked by fewer than 10% of FPL managers.

GK – Bart Verbruggen | 4.5m | 5.9% Ownership

Brighton are one of six clubs who are unbeaten across their last four Premier League games, plus they won at Old Trafford in the FA Cup recently as well. Their defence has been a big part of their success. The Seagulls have only conceded three goals in their previous four matches in all competitions.

With two of those goals coming from penalties and the fixtures including trips to face both Manchester clubs, that’s good going. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has a chance of further clean sheets soon.

He’ll be up against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday. If he can handle Harry Wilson, the king of long-range bangers, the Dutch shot-stopper will be well on his way to a shutout. Brighton follow that game by hosting Everton and Crystal Palace, two of the seven lowest-scoring teams in the top flight.

A final positive for Verbruggen should you need one: he’s excellent value. No goalkeeper who costs £4.5m or less has earned as many FPL points this season. He’s cheap, but we can still go Dutch if you like.

DEF – Josh Acheampong | 3.8m | 1.3% Ownership

Brighton are not the only team who face Crystal Palace soon. Chelsea are off to Selhurst Park on Sunday but whether Oliver Glasner will be there to greet them feels TBC at this point.

Palace have a terrible record in this London derby. Granted, the last three meetings ended all-square, but Chelsea won the 14 clashes prior to that (in all competitions). You have to go back to 2017 to find Palace’s last victory and good luck guessing how many managers the Blues have had since then.

New boss Liam Rosenior will then face West Ham, Wolves, Leeds and Burnley, with all but the second of those games at Stamford Bridge. It means the Blues’ next five league opponents average just 1.05 goals per game with a maximum of 1.36 (Leeds). It’s a good time to be a Chelsea defender.

The challenge is knowing which one to pick. Rosenior has used nine different starting defenders in his four matches, none of whom has been included more than twice.

If we went by points-per-start by players in under 10% of FPL teams, Malo Gusto would be the pick. However, he started in midweek. Next in line is Josh Acheampong, who, while not a regular throughout the campaign, has started four of the previous seven matches.

At just £3.8m, he’s a bargain. No player with at least six starts and costing a maximum of £4.0m averages as many points per start as Acheampong this season.

MID – Alejandro Garnacho | 6.4m | 0.6% Ownership

We should stick with Chelsea as we head into midfield, given the kindness of their forthcoming schedule. As you would expect from a group of opponents that don’t score many goals, they also concede quite a few.

Palace are the notable exception, but the Blues’ are then up against four clubs that allow 1.86 goals per game between them. There will be ample opportunities for goals and assists in those matches.

The near constant rotation makes it hard to know who to select. Alejandro Garnacho is one of only five players to appear in all four games under Rosenior though. He recently scored twice against Arsenal too.

That was in the League Cup and it’s fair to say he has yet to deliver for the Blues in the Premier League. A return of one goal and three assists is a little underwhelming, even allowing for the Argentinian not joining the club until after 2025-26 had begun. Only Reece James has more assists for the club, in fairness, with four.

Garnacho’s goal tally hasn’t been for a lack of trying. He had five shots against Newcastle, four versus Sunderland and Everton. Only six players in the division with at least as many minutes have underachieved against their expected goals by more per 90 minutes this season.

Manchester United fans will not be surprised by that fact. But it does mean Garnacho should be back among the goals in the league soon.

FWD – Brian Brobbey | 5.5m | 0.7% Ownership

Our next pick is here for a good time, not a long time. In early February, Sunderland head to Arsenal then host Liverpool in the space of five days. While they can play largely free from pressure in those games, it will be hard for their attacking players to earn FPL points.

It should be easier against West Ham and Burnley, the two sides they face before they visit the Emirates Stadium. These opponents are collectively conceding 1.95 goals per league game this term. No other side’s next two are allowing more than 1.59 per match.

This offers Brian Brobbey a great chance to continue his decent form. The 23-year-old has scored in two of his last three Premier League matches to give him four in total this season. It’s obviously harder in England than in his homeland of Netherlands, but he got 20 in all competitions for Ajax in 2023-24. Brobbey knows where the goal is.

He also has a special skill in that he shoots exclusively from inside the box. Lukas Nmecha of Leeds is the only player in the division who has fired off more shots when every single one has been from within the penalty area.

With at least two shots in each of his last five league appearances that lasted at least an hour, Brobbey should get close-range opportunities against his forthcoming claret opponents.

FWD – Eli Kroupi | 4.6m | 4.5% Ownership

Our final selection is one of only two forwards who has more FPL points than Brobbey while also costing less. Bournemouth’s Eli Kroupi has the second-best points-per-start average among forwards with eight or more starts who are currently in less than 10% of FPL teams.

As the one man above him (Richarlison) is currently sidelined with injury, you’d better buy Kroupi, hadn’t you?

The Cherries host Liverpool this weekend. The Reds won 3-0 at Marseille on Wednesday so face a tight turnaround before heading to Bournemouth. In their two league matches on the road which directly followed UEFA Champions League away games this season, Liverpool conceded five goals in total.

Bournemouth are then at Molineux next weekend. As much as Wolves have improved, they’ve still only won a single league game all season.

And while the Cherries haven’t been in great form themselves, goals haven’t been an issue. They scored in each of their last eight matches in all competitions, netting twice or more in five of them.

Kroupi scored three times in this run. His goals came against Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham so he won’t be worried about a massive club in Liverpool.

He has also missed just one of his Opta-defined big chances in the league. Even if that proves unsustainable, as is likely, the youngster averages a very healthy 0.19 expected goals per shot. Liverpool and Wolves need to be very wary of Kroupi.
