While Martin himself has long remained adamant that he'll soon publish a sixth novel in the series after 2011's A Dance with Dragons, many fans have worried that the author ultimately won't complete the series with the long-awaited publication of The Winds of Winter.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin confirmed that he's hard at work writing The Winds of Winter as we speak. With the writer teasing that the new book will be the longest entry in A Song of Ice & Fire to date, he also iterated that no one would like the novel finished more than him.
As the years tick by, however, Martin also discussed the possibility of passing away before he's able to complete the novel. In that event, Martin said he'd like for the books to remain unfinished, similar to Charles Dickens' final novel the author failed to complete before his death in 1870.
As hopeful as Martin is he'll finish the series, he also mentioned that his plate is currently full with various projects within the Ice & Fire universe, including the literary source material for HBO's House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
"I have to write more Dunk and Egg. There’s supposed to be another Fire and Blood book, too," Martin said. "I do think if I can just get some of these other things off my back, I could finish The Winds of Winter pretty soon. It’s been made clear to me that Winds is the priority, but … I don’t know. Sometimes I’m not in the mood for that.”
