American Red Cross faces severe blood shortage ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The American Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage, with donations down 35 percent nationwide over the past month. The ongoing flu season and harsh winter weather have exacerbated the situation.

“Unfortunately then doctors and hospital have to start making decisions about how they’re using the blood,” said Michael Tedesco, Regional Communications Director for the American Red Cross.

Tedesco explained that patients needing elective surgeries might face postponements, and cancer patients may not receive the necessary platelet supply. This could leave them in a compromised situation.

The Red Cross is encouraging people to donate blood at various locations. Those who donate through Sunday will be entered for a chance to win two tickets to the Super Bowl in California, including airfare and a three-night hotel stay.
