Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport said on Wednesday, 21 January, that the radar system newly introduced at Damascus International Airport is a civilian radar dedicated exclusively to air navigation and the management of civil air traffic.
The authority said the new system is used within the aviation safety framework and operates under the authority’s full and direct control, in line with national laws and applicable international regulations.

The Israeli website INEWS 24 reported that the Turkish army installed an advanced radar in Syria as “part of steps to entrench the Turkish presence on Syrian territory.”

The Secondary Surveillance Radar enhances aircraft tracking capabilities through an identification friend or foe (IFF) system and provides support for multi-interrogation modes used in various operations.
Anadolu added that the system features an “active, distributed hot standby” architecture, described as rare globally, allowing it to continue operating even if one component fails. This helps prevent a complete shutdown and supports continuity of air traffic during critical moments.
The system also uses smart algorithms to handle poor weather and interference. With advanced noise suppression technologies, it can track targets clearly even during storms or heavy rain.
Anadolu noted that the new system includes a dedicated channel for real-time weather monitoring, as well as algorithms capable of distinguishing between aircraft, wind turbines, and flocks of birds, raising operational safety.
The system is designed for more than 40,000 operating hours before critical failures. It also reduces downtime, with repair time under 30 minutes when maintenance is needed. The radar’s range can be set to 80 or 100 nautical miles (about 185 kilometers).
