Students will rally against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday at 11:30 a.m. on the Quad in front of Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library.
The participating organizations are Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of Alabama, the Queer Student Association, the Leftist Collective and Friends of the Union.
According to an analysis from Prison Policy Initiative, a nonprofit organization that produces research information on the United States criminal justice system, I.C.E. arrested 3,402 people in Alabama in between Jan. 20 through Oct. 15, 2025, ranking 15th in the nation.
In March 2025, former UA student Alireza Doroudi was detained by I.C.E. in his home. He has since self-deported back to Iran. The University did not acknowledge Doroudi by name between the time of his arrest and self-deportation.
Sophia Kyemba, president of Leftist Collective, said that organizations want to “get students motivated” and “mobilized” about the actions carried out by I.C.E., and that the organizations “want to educate students on the history of immigration in the U.S. and the history of I.C.E.”
