At 8:07 pm, Jon Heyman posted the following on X: “Hearing something is brewing with Mets and Brewers. Four minutes later, he dropped the news: “Breaking: Mets in talks to acquire Freddy Peralta.”
And away we went.
Mets in Talks to Acquire Freddy Peralta
UPDATE: The move is now complete, per Jeff Passan. It’s Freddy Peralta (and likely Tobias Myers) going to the Mets for two very good prospects, Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat.
BREAKING: The New York Mets have acquired All-Star right-hander Freddy Peralta in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, sources tell ESPN. Deal is done. Top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat are headed to Milwaukee. One more big league pitcher will head to the Mets.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) January 22, 2026This is just a good, smart move for the Brewers, who often make good, smart moves.
Additional thoughts I wrote before it was confirmed:
The Mets have been busy completely transforming their roster this offseason.
Among MANY others notable names, they have subtracted Pete Alonso (signed with the Orioles), Ryan Helsley (signed with the Orioles), Edwin Diaz (signed with the Dodgers), Brandon Nimmo (traded to the Rangers), and Jeff McNeil (traded to the Athletics). And in their place, they’ve added Devin Williams, Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., and now Freddy Peralta (among others).
It’s a lot of change, but that roster definitely felt stuck in place, and you definitely want to maximize the early and most productive years of that MASSIVE Juan Soto free agent deal. Plus, David Stearns is among the league’s best baseball execs. I wouldn’t be surprised if this all works out for him.
Speaking of which, Stearns was, of course, the head baseball executive of Freddy Peralta’s Brewers … not that Stearns needed a prior connection to have an eye on acquiring him. We know as well as anyone that Peralta is very, very good. And for us Cubs fans, that cuts two ways.
On the one hand, the Brewers should be worse in 2026 without Freddy Peralta than with him. And seeing as the Cubs are going all-in on 2026, that really doesn’t hurt. Especially as the Pirates still seem a bit away and the Cardinals are in a full-on rebuild. Yeah, with this, I think it’s safe to say the NL Central might be a little more winnable than usual next season.
Of course, I said something like that about the Brewers after they lost David Stearns, Craig Counsell, Josh Hader, Devin Williams, Willy Adames, and Corbin Burnes, so … who knows. They are the devil magic team in this league right now, no matter how many key pieces they lose (from the front office, to the dugout, to the field, to the mound, both starting and relief!).
© Michael McLoone-Imagn ImagesOn the other hand, even if the Brewers do somehow feel this loss to our short-term benefit, this is likely to be a very productive deal for them in the long run. The Mets have a great farm system right now (including six on BA’s just released Top-100 prospect rankings). And two of those players are reportedly involved in these conversations.
Brewers have asked on Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams in a Peralta trade. Tobias Myers would go to the Mets in the deal if finalized and it is progressing
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) January 22, 2026Brandon Sproat is a 25-year-old right-handed starter who debuted at the very end of last season and ranks 81st according to Baseball America. Jett Williams is a 22-year-old shortstop who destroyed Double-A last season (156 wRC+) and got promoted to Triple-A by the end of the year.
Those are two very, very good prospects to get for one year of Freddy Peralta (and swing-man Tobias Myers, who I don’t want to minimize, but still).
The Brewers may have been forced into this a little by way of Brandon Woodruff accepting the qualifying offer, but I think they were considering it anyway and, again, always seem to do well when they sell.
