Charles Bediako gets temporary eligibility, will return to Alabama ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Former Alabama men’s basketball center Charles Bediako — who last played for the Crimson Tide in 2023 — has been granted a temporary restraining order in his lawsuit against the NCAA, which will allow him to return to the team immediately.

Bediako filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the NCAA in his bid to return to Tuscaloosa, after spending parts of three seasons playing professionally in the NBA G-League. Bediako left Alabama in April 2023 for the NBA Draft but was not selected.

Tuscaloosa Circuit Court judge James H. Roberts Jr. ruled that Bediako is “immediately eligible” to participate in all team activities, including games. Roberts also ruled that the NCAA is restrained from “threatening, imposing, attempting to impose, suggesting, or implying” any penalties or sanctions against Bediako or the University of Alabama.

Former professional players have previously been granted eligibility by the NCAA, including Baylor center James Nnaji, who was drafted 31st overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Nnaji was also included in a blockbuster three-team trade that saw five-time All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns traded to the New York Knicks.

But, the governing body said in a statement Tuesday that it would not clear Bediako or “any prospective or returning student-athletes who have signed an NBA contract.”

After Bediako was granted the order on Wednesday morning, the NCAA called upon Congress to take action.

“These attempts to sidestep NCAA rules and recruit individuals who have finished their time in college or signed NBA contracts are taking away opportunities from high school students,” the NCAA said in a statement. “A judge ordering the NCAA let a former NBA player take the court Saturday against actual college student-athletes is exactly why Congress must step in and empower college sports to enforce our eligibility rules.”

The temporary restraining order granted to Bediako will expire on Tuesday, when Alabama hosts Missouri. A hearing on his request for a preliminary injunction is also set for Tuesday, which could result in Bediako returning for just one game if an injunction is not granted.
