Liverpool eased to a 3-0 win in Marseille as they put themselves in a strong position for automatic qualification for the last 16 in the UEFA Champions League.
Dominik Szoboszlai gave Arne Slot’s men the lead just before half-time from a free-kick in the Orange Vélodrome, before a Gerónimo Rulli own goal and a late strike from Cody Gakpo sealed the three points.
Liverpool go into the final matchday of the league phase in fourth spot, two points ahead of the team in ninth as they look to secure a top-eight finish, with Qarabag to come to Anfield in their last game next week.
Mohamed Salah came back into the starting lineup for Liverpool for the first time since their 4-1 home defeat to PSV on Matchday 5, having returned from helping Egypt to fourth place at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Liverpool thought they’d taken the lead in the 23rd minute when Hugo Ekitiké converted from a Szoboszlai cross, but the France striker was found to be offside after a VAR check.
Marseille’s only shot of the first half was a dangerous one, with Amine Gouiri forcing a fine save from Alisson following a deep free-kick that landed with him, but it was otherwise Slot’s men who were largely on top for the first 45 minutes.
They had to wait until just before half-time to take the lead, though. Szoboszlai and Salah stood over a free-kick on the edge of the Marseile box, and it was the Hungarian who drilled it under the wall and low to Rulli’s left.
Szoboszlai is the first Liverpool player to score more than one free-kicks in a single season since Trent Alexander-Arnold in 2022-23 (also 2).
The former RB Leipzig midfielder is also the third Liverpool player to be involved in a goal on five consecutive Champions League games (4 goals, 2 assists) after Steven Gerrard (5 in October 2007-February 2008 and September-November 2008) and Salah (6 in September 2022-February 2023).
Roberto De Zerbi’s side were brighter at the start of the second half, with Mason Greenwood, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Timothy Weah all having efforts at Alisson’s goal, but they rarely looked like getting back into the game.
Liverpool’s lead was doubled in the 72nd minute when Jeremie Frimpong cut inside from the right side before trying to slide a ball across the six-yard box, only for it to clip Rulli’s foot and roll into the far corner of the net.
There was more Dutch influence in the third as Ryan Gravenberch ran onto a sublime flick from Szoboszlai, before playing substitute Gakpo in on the left. The former PSV man got the ball onto his right foot and finished well past Rulli.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 13 matches in all competitions (W7 D6), the longest ongoing streak of any team from Europe’s big five leagues.
Slot had to answer a question at his press conference on Tuesday about his future as Liverpool boss, but this performance was a perfect way of answering his critics as the Reds closed in on automatic qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League.
