Newcastle United gave themselves a real chance of qualification for the last 16 with a routine 3-0 win over PSV in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
The St. James’ Park crowd delighted in a very strong performance from the Magpies, with goals from Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes sealing three points that take them up into the top eight and an automatic place in the round of 16.
Gordon equalled Alan Shearer’s record for most goals for Newcastle in the competition (6), and the England international continued his excellent form in the Champions League. He has six goals in seven games this season in Europe (3 penalties), compared to just two in 17 in the Premier League, both of which were penalties.
PSV were missing Ismael Saibari and Ricardo Pepi, who both played a big part in their shock 4-1 win at Liverpool on Matchday 5, and that lack of attacking threat showed. Peter Bosz’s side didn’t look anywhere near the levels they produced at Anfield as they were swept aside in Newcastle.
It was a fast start from the hosts, and they were ahead in just the eighth minute. PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovár sent a clearance straight to Bruno Guimarães, who passed forward quickly to Joelinton, and he found Wissa in space in the penalty area to finish. It was the DR Congo international’s first goal in the Champions League, and set Eddie Howe’s men on their way.
Gordon made it 2-0 from another horrible PSV error just before the half-hour mark. Yarek Gasiorowski dallied in possession and allowed Wissa to nick it off him, with the former Brentford man giving the ball to Gordon as Kovár rushed out, putting it on a plate for a simple finish into the open net.
Guimarães was making his 13th start in the Champions League, the most of any outfield player for Newcastle and just one fewer than their record appearance maker in the competition, Shay Given (14). However, it wasn’t a perfect evening for the Brazilian as he was forced off with an injury in the first half.
The hosts kept forcing the issue and were three up in the 65th minute when Barnes latched onto an errant header back from Jerdy Schouten, before jinking into the box and firing low past Kovár.
Howe’s men saw out the comfortable win to take them to seventh in the table, on 13 points from their first seven games. However, there is plenty of work still to do going into the final day as one of eight teams on 13 points between 6-13th position.
Another of those eight teams are reigning holders Paris Saint-Germain, who Newcastle travel to face in their last game of the league phase next week. It would be a tough test, but they have given themselves a better chance than perhaps many expected.
