I underestimated Faraaz – but only he can bring down Traitor Rachel ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Faraaz is the kind of guy you want to be friends with. Relaxed to the point of being horizontal, smiley and always up for the challenges, he is easy to root for on a show like The Traitors, where skullduggery and backstabbing is rewarded. But he hasn’t always made for great television.

Sure, there was the brilliant early moment when he had to pretend to “milk” Jack during the painting challenge, and the occasional excellent one-liner (“Mate it is off it, that,” he said in his Middlesbrough lilt when Traitor Fiona was banished). But he hasn’t been at the centre of any of the drama, and is so seemingly unbothered by the darker machinations of The Traitors – “I know it’s a game,” he once shrugged when Rachel suggested his calm demeanour was suspicious – that he has occasionally risked undermining the entire show.

I do wonder how the producers felt about Faraaz’s laid-back attitude to the game; they rely on players being emotionally involved, and swept up in the drama of it all – hence Harriet and Fiona’s sensational exits. Faraaz’s “it’s just a game” point of view almost makes the high-pressure environment – and therefore the entire show – all feel a bit silly.

Worse still, he hasn’t been too vocal about his suspicions. Until tonight.

“I think it’s Rachel,” he admitted in a shock reveal of his true thoughts. He’s far from the first Faithful to have hit the nail on the head and correctly named Rachel as a Traitor – Harriet was very forthcoming about her suspicions and paid the ultimate price for it. But it seems that he might have learned from her mistake.

“My strategy for today is to vote for Jade first,” he explained. “I’m probably the only one who’s got strong suspicions on Rachel in the group. It’s about being smart about it and being calm and composed. It’s about picking the right time.” With that foresight, Faraaz is on the path to proving himself one of the best Faithfuls in the game – and the only one with the savviness to bring down the ultimate Traitor, Rachel.

It’s well-known that only “bad” Faithfuls can get through to the final – those who consistently point their fingers in the right direction are swiftly murdered or framed by the Traitors. But in the case of Faraaz, that’s not necessarily true.

Not only has he correctly identified Stephen as a Traitor in the past (based on the time they were left in cages following a particularly meddlesome mission), he has also been pretty good at spotting his fellow Faithfuls. When everyone turned against Amanda and Reece, both of whom were stitched up by the Traitors, he was adamant that they were Faithfuls. He was also a big proponent of the early (and correct) theory that Ross was framed and banished under false pretences.

While Faraaz said he was going to bide his time and “pick the right moment” to announce his suspicions of Rachel, he went ahead and announced his misgivings just hours later, after tonight’s Round Table. “I’ve been thinking about why I’m still here and I think it’s Rachel,” he said to Roxy and Stephen – a flimsy theory, until he backed it up with evidence from the game (something this year’s Faithfuls have been infuriatingly bad at).

“Fiona didn’t have that many one-to-one chats,” he went on. “I feel they [Fiona and Rachel] had a one-to-one chat because there was trust there. There must have been a disagreement and Fiona’s thrown her toys out of the pram.” Ding, ding, ding! Finally, someone is joining the dots!

This series of The Traitors has been a bit up and down. There’s been gobsmacking arguments and wild accusations thrown around, but nothing has really stuck. It’s almost as though the Faithfuls have their memories wiped every time they leave the castle. Faraaz’s sudden clarity over Rachel’s Traitor status isn’t just great TV – it’s cathartic. At last, someone is following the advice we’ve been shouting at our screens for weeks.

Whether or not Faraaz’s decision to go and tell the rest of the gang – including Rachel – about his doubts will backfire remains to be seen. But he appears to be in a pretty safe position: if he is murdered, Rachel will come under fire. All he has to do now is convince the rest of the Faithfuls that he is on their team – not easy when Rachel, who is well-liked and has a lot of influence in the game, could easily accuse him of deflecting.

For now, it would appear that Faraaz’s tranquility has been the ace up his sleeve the entire time, letting him fly under the radar until he had enough evidence to put Rachel back on the ropes. For the first time this series, she might not be able to wriggle out of this one.

‘The Traitors’ continues tomorrow at 8pm on BBC One
