First Alert Weather: A little less frigid today… But chances for snow continue through the weekend, alongside another arctic blast ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After yesterday’s blustery and frigid weather, we’re getting a “break” in the arctic air – we might even get near 32 degrees! (And funny enough, that won’t even happen until after sunset.) Jokes aside, the wind will not be AS bad today, meaning wind chills will be slightly less brutal, and we do have some more snow showers in the forecast for this afternoon, but accumulations will be little to none and it should not have an impact on the roads. Late tonight there is a chance for a snow squall off Lake Erie.

The next three days will get progressively colder as more arctic air is shoveled in to the eastern U.S. Thursday will peak in the upper 20s, Friday the mid teens, and Saturday we will only be in the single digits! Be careful not to spend too much time outside, and if you do, wear MULTIPLE warm layers. It’s going to be brutal.

Alongside those cold temperatures comes more lake effect snow off of Lake Erie Thursday and off of Lake Ontario Friday and Saturday before a potential widespread snow storm affects the region on Sunday. We are closely monitoring that system and will send out updates as it approaches. As usual, Rochester and the Finger Lakes may not see THAT much new lake effect snowfall through Saturday, but accumulations will certainly be impactful out near Buffalo. As for the widespread snowfall on Sunday, it’s too early to call. Some of the recent model trends suggest anywhere from 4 inches to a foot. There is still a lot of uncertainty, so check back later.

In terms of temperature, also not much improvement on Sunday. The thermometer won’t get back up to even the mid 20s until next Wednesday. And then after that, looks like yet another arctic blast. This is a very stubborn and unpleasant pattern to break. One thing to note though is that with large scale cold patterns like this, although they can last for weeks, when they do eventually break down it is very abrupt and only takes a few days. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that breakdown will be happening anytime soon. Stay tuned with News10 NBC over the next few days as we continue to track this bitterly cold air, and for an update on the Sunday snow.
