ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Enforcement of Rochester’s new school bus safety program is now in effect. Drivers caught on camera passing a stopped school bus will receive a ticket and points on their license.

News10NBC took this question to leaders from the Rochester City School District and Rochester Police Department. RPD Captain Greg Bello explained, “Unique to New York versus a lot of other states is when a school bus has its red lights flashing out, you got to stop no matter where you are on the roadway or the design of the roadway. So on a divided roadway, if there’s curbs going down the middle, or separated, you still need to stop for the school bus on the other side.”
A diagram on the City of Rochester’s website shows that even with a median across four lanes of traffic, drivers are required to stop for the school bus. Fines for passing a stopped bus start at $250.
