FREMONT — H Mart is planning a flagship store in Fremont that will serve as a prototype and introduce some pioneering features for the Asian supermarket chain, business executives said Tuesday.
The new store will operate on two levels and include a food hall and dine-in restaurants in addition to its wide-ranging grocery offerings, according to H Mart and Vestar.

(Google Street View)“The ground floor will feature the grocery store, while the second floor will include a food hall, bar, restaurant, and communal spaces,” said Carli Richards, a spokesperson for Vestar, a real estate firm that manages the Pacific Commons commercial hub where the store will be located.
The store will be near the interchange of Interstate 880 and Auto Mall Parkway.
“This flagship H Mart further reinforces Pacific Commons as a leading retail destination in Northern California and its continued evolution into a true shopping, dining, and entertainment district,” said Rick Hearn, vice president of leasing with Vestar.
A site plan for Pacific Commons shows that the H Mart will be located in a former Kohl’s store at 43782 Christy St., according to a marketing brochure circulated by commercial real estate firm Lockehouse.
The H Mart would open next to existing stores operated by Burlington and Nordstrom Rack, the marketing flyer shows. The brochure lists an H Mart store as “coming soon” at the former Kohl’s site.
“At H Mart, we strive to enrich lives through our Asian heritage, food, and culture,” said Brian Kwon, president of H Mart. “This new location represents a bold new chapter for us.”
An East Coast group with ties to a real estate firm and H Mart executive paid just under $18.3 million for the shuttered Kohl’s site, documents on file with the Alameda County Recorder’s Office show.
The new H Mart will total about 98,000 square feet, the marketing brochure shows.
“By blending elevated dining and community spaces, we are creating a premier destination for food lovers where diverse ethnicities of friends and neighbors can gather,” Kwon said. “Our priority is to provide the Fremont community with a convenient one-stop shopping experience and high-quality food and service.”
The new H Mart is slated to begin construction before the end of this year.
In 2017, H Mart opened a San Jose store that, at the time, was the supermarket chain’s first retail establishment in Northern California.
“The innovative reuse of a vacant large-format retail space reflects the city’s strategic commitment to reimagining vacant commercial properties into destinations that generate jobs, amenities, and lasting community value,” Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan said.
Pacific Commons Shopping Center, owned by Heitman and managed by Phoenix-based Vestar, is home to more than 55 retailers and restaurants, including Target, Costco, T.J. Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, and Sephora.
“We are actively adapting to our consumers’ shopping preferences, focused on welcoming experiential, destination-driven concepts that energize the center and serve the broader community,” Hearn said.
