PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Protests popped up across the nation Tuesday as people walked out of schools, businesses, and jobs to mark the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s second term.
Protesters expressed feeling unsettled by recent events across the country, particularly in the last three weeks. The protest at Nazareth University’s campus saw about 50 participants.
Sophie Williams, the organizer, said she’s never been to a protest before, but when she saw the national call to protest, she wanted to get involved.
“I learned about it a week ago. I looked online to see if Rochester was doing any events, had anything planned and took it upon myself,” said Williams.
Jamie Kipp, another protester, said, “If we want to make a change, we can do it, and we can do that by going out and voicing what we believe. And when Sophie told me about this I was like ‘absolutely. I wanna do it.'”
The walkout lasted about an hour. Students cited reasons for their protest, including the capture of Venezuela’s leader, ICE arrests, and a recent shooting in Minneapolis.
Nazareth University released a statement saying in part it “fully supports all of its students, faculty, and staff in their right to express their beliefs peacefully and respectfully.”
