During a Tuesday (Jan. 20) appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box, the soccer legend remained diplomatic and refrained from directly addressing Brooklyn’s statement the day prior. In a series of posts on his Story, the eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham had alleged that his parents had been “trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding” and value “public promotion and endorsements above all else.”
Instead, David broached the subject of social media more generally by saying, “I have always spoken about social media and the power of social media, for the good and for the bad. It can be dangerous.”
“What I have found personally, especially with my kids, as well: Use it for the right reasons,” he continued, noting that he takes pride in using his platform to support humanitarian organization UNICEF. “They make mistakes, but children are allowed to make mistakes. That is how they learn. That is what I try to teach my kids.”
“You sometimes have to let them make those mistakes as well,” the former athlete added.
David shares four children with the Spice Girls alum, welcoming sons Romeo and Cruz and daughter Harper in the years after the couple first became parents with the birth of Brooklyn in 1999. The latter married Peltz, an actress and the daughter of billionaire Nelson Peltz, in 2022.
On Monday (Jan. 19), after weeks of a rumored rift within the Beckham family, Brooklyn wrote on his Story that, because his “parents and their team have continued to go to the press,” he felt he had “no choice but to speak for myself and tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.”
Brooklyn went on to allege that David and Victoria had “controlled narratives in the press about our family” for his entire life, through “performative social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships.” He also accused his mother of promising to design Nicola’s wedding dress before canceling last minute and of “repeatedly” inviting women from his past into their lives, as well as claimed that Victoria had danced “inappropriately on [him] in front of everyone” when Brooklyn was supposed to be having a “romantic dance” with his new wife.
“I do not want to reconcile with my family,” he stated. “I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”
Billboard has reached out to David and Victoria Beckham’s reps for comment.
Brooklyn’s claims have been circulating widely online in the past 24 hours, building on speculation from late last year. Fans previously noticed in December that David and Victoria had appeared to unfollow their eldest child on Instagram, after which Cruz clarified on his Story, “My mum and dad would never unfollow their son.. Let’s get the facts right. They woke up blocked… as did I.”
Together, David and Victoria have built one of the most prominent families in the entertainment business. The former boasts six Premier League titles, two FA Cup victories and one Champions League honor, while the latter is the owner of eponymous fashion and beauty labels.
