ELMIRA, N.Y. — An inmate a Elmira Correctional Facility has been charged with attempted murder after State Police say he was involved in what they call a violent assault.
State Police say in September of 2024, they learned about an assault at Elmira Correctional Facility involving an inmate.
State Police say that inmate suffered severe head injuries as a result, and needed emergency medical treatment. They also say the victim has been brought to multiple medical facilities and remains in critical condition.
As a result of investigations, State Police identified 50-year-old Oscar Fernandez as a suspect. On Jan. 5, 2026, Fernandez got a Superior Court warrant that charged him with two counts of assault and attempted murder.
Fernandez is set to be arraigned in Chemung County Court. State Police say the investigation is still ongoing.
