Live After the Grateful Dead: How the Band’s Members Sold 10 Million Tickets After Jerry Garcia’s Death ...Middle East

News by : (billboard) -

The Grateful Dead is one of the most iconic, influential and enduring live music institutions in rock history. Not only did the band crown Billboard’s year-end Top Tours chart multiple times in the 1990s, its surviving “Core Four” members — Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir — continued to tour in the wake of the death of singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia, on their own and in different combinations.

Following the passing of founding member Weir on Jan. 10, Billboard is looking at all the different iterations of post-Grateful Dead touring, by the band and by the numbers.

Having formed in 1965, decades before the development of Boxscore reporting, the Grateful Dead’s total career ticket sales is unknown. (One fan estimate suggests the band sold more than 22 million tickets over its career.) As Billboard’s touring charts evolved in the 1980s, the band reported a total of $115.3 million from 356 shows between 1984-90, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. When the inaugural year-end ranking for Top Tours was published in 1991, the Grateful Dead sat at No. 1 with $35.2 million from 1.6 million tickets sold that year.

The band returned to the summit in 1993, while ranking among the top 10 tours in 1992, ’94 and ’95. When Garcia died in August 1995, the band had amassed $310 million from 7.9 million tickets over 681 shows reported to Boxscore. But while its founding group was one fewer, Hart, Kreutzmann, Lesh and Weir carried the band’s legacy into the 21st century by way of upwards of 20 different touring formations. Following Weir’s death, along with Lesh’s, in October 2024, only Hart, 82, and Kreutzmann, 79, remain.

Altogether, 22 post-Dead touring entities featuring founding Grateful Dead members have grossed $969.3 million and sold 10.7 million tickets since Garcia’s death. Scroll for a breakdown of the different iterations of Dead-related touring over the last 30 years.

Gross and attendance figures are based on reports to Billboard by a variety of official industry sources, from artist managers to promoters to venue executives. Reporting is voluntary.
