During the speech, Freeman revealed that he legally changed his name in 2017, a devision rooted in his belief in his future and purpose. “I was so convinced that this was going to work out, that I changed my name,” he said. “I changed my name in 2017 from Derek Lashawn Kennedy, to Sean Freeman, because I wanted a name that complimented my dream.”
Freeman also spoke about the meaning behind his last name, emphasizing its historical and personal significance. “I chose the surname Freeman because it was inspired by the stories of my ancestors, the enslaved, noticed I didn’t say slaves, because my ancestors were not slaves, they were enslaved. Many of whom who decided to make a mark with their new identity by dropping their masters quote unquote sir name, and choosing for themselves the name Freeman.”
“So, when I say my name,” Freeman shared, “It translates to because God has been gracious with me, I’m a Freeman, and that is the name that I go by.”
