3 reasons Cam Coleman moves the needle for Texas ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

The last time we saw Texas, it was putting up 41 points against Michigan on its way to winning the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in comeback fashion. That allowed Steve Sarkisian and company to end the season on a modest 3-game winning streak.

Thanks to the transfer portal, when Texas returns to the field next fall, the roster will look completely different from the one that didn’t live up to the preseason billing of being the best team in college football in 2025.

Instead, the roster will be full of transfer portal commits like LB Rasheem Biles, RBs Hollywood Smothers and Raleek Brown, and WR Cam Coleman, who was the most-coveted receiver in the portal.

Coleman’s commitment is the game-changer Texas needed to keep the train rolling on its impressive efforts to rebuild its roster ahead of the 2026 season, as Texas currently has the No. 2 transfer portal class for 2026, according to 247Sports. The talented rising junior receiver had 93 catches for 1,306 yards and 13 touchdowns over his first 2 seasons in the SEC while playing for Auburn.

With Coleman in the fold, Arch Manning now has another lethal option at his disposal to help improve a Texas offense that disappeared at times this past season. Here are 3 ways Coleman can help make Texas’s offense become one of the most explosive in the nation next season:

1. Coleman gives Manning more opportunities to produce explosive plays down field

Despite scoring 34 points or more in 6 games this season, the Longhorns’ offense was consistently inconsistent due to not having a major downfield big-play threat other than rising junior receiver Ryan Wingo. Last season, Texas’s offense was held to 23 points or less in half of its games vs. Power Conference competition while statistically finishing as the worst offense of the Sarkisian era at Texas.

With Coleman added to the roster, Manning now has 2 big-play threats to lean on to help a Texas passing attack that ranked No. 44 in the nation in 2025, averaging just over 250 yards per game. Despite throwing for over 3,000 yards, Manning only completed 33 explosive passes of 20+ yards on the season.

For his career, Coleman is averaging 14 yards per catch and will have a lot of opportunities to consistently get yards after catch (YAC) and make big plays in Sarkisian’s scheme.

Another reason Coleman’s signing is huge for the Longhorns is that it negates the loss of DeAndre Moore Jr. who, despite having inconsistent performances, was a big-play threat at times for Texas, hauling in 5 explosive pass receptions last season.

Bottom line, despite Coleman having some drop issues at Auburn, Texas is getting a big-body target who can make contested catches while consistently stretching the field and making acrobatic circus catches look routine, especially in the red zone. The talented receiver’s presence alone should help out a Texas offense that struggled mightily to get touchdowns in tight situations in 2025.

2. Texas run game gets a boost as Coleman’s presence should lead to less stacked boxes

Coleman’s presence doesn’t only improve the passing game, but it will give the running game a much-needed boost after it failed to produce a 1,000-yard rusher last season for the first time in the Sarkisian era at Texas. Improving the running game, which averaged 4.2 yards per carry in 2025 is a must for Texas.

A more productive running game will give Coleman and Wingo more opportunities to make explosive plays down the field.

The running game was so inept last season, Manning’s 60-yard highlight reel run in the Citrus Bowl was the longest run of the year by a Texas player and his 10 touchdowns runs accounted for 60% of the Longhorns’ overall rushing touchdown total.

After consistently seeing stacked boxes due to defenses daring Manning to beat them with his arm, the threat of Coleman’s big-play ability will force most defenses to keep their safeties back, therefore paving the way for either Smothers or Brown to do damage on the ground to keep Texas’s offense balanced.

3. Coleman gives Texas a player with a history of success against the SEC

By playing for Auburn, Coleman is very familiar with the SEC and has established a good track record of success in the conference. This is a big plus for the Longhorns, as Coleman is averaging 76.8 receiving yards per game when playing against SEC ranked teams and has caught 6 touchdowns in those 10 games.

For what it’s worth, 2 of Coleman’s best games when playing in a more pass-efficient offense as a freshman occurred against Texas’s bitter rivals Oklahoma and Texas A&M. In those games, Coleman combined for 10 catches, 210 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. Production like this will be expected next season in Austin, as Texas is going all in on its offense and will depend on Smothers and Brown delivering on the ground and Manning, Wingo and Coleman creating one of the most dynamic passing games in the nation.
