STRONG CULTURE, PLAYOFF STRUGGLES .. A retrospective on Sean McDermott’s tenure as Bills head coach and what’s to come ...Middle East

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The nine-year tenure of Sean McDermott is over. He took over in 2017 and instilled a winning culture, but after another heartbreaking playoff loss, the Bills move on.

“I’m looking to build a culture of winning, and that starts inside these walls and extends to our community,” McDermott said during his opening press conference in 2017.

And McDermott achieved that, in his first year at the helm, he snapped a 17-year playoff drought.

“A lot of grown men in that room crying because of where they know they’re going and all the hard work and sweat and tears that have gone into this thing,” McDermott said after clinching a playoff spot in the 2017 season.

McDermott led the team to a 98-50 record over his tenure with players that adored him.

Shaq Thompson, one day before McDermott was fired said, “I believe everybody in that locker room would run through a wall for coach McDermott.”

Evidenced by the fact that several veterans like Jordan Phillips, DaQuan Jones, and Taron Johnson have all criticized the move via social media.

But what ultimately did him in was another playoff failure.

“I feel like I let my teammates down tonight,” said quarterback Josh Allen following the recent loss to the Broncos.

McDermott had that guy, Josh Allen, a league MVP under center, but never could get to the Super Bowl.

There’s plenty of blame to go around–Allen committed four turnovers against the Broncos, but is probably the sole reason the Bills are even in this position.

Spencer Brown after Saturday’s loss, “We know we wouldn’t have a shot in hell at winning a football game without him there. So, yeah, I love the guy.”

The team, under general manager, Brandon Beane has struggled, drafting just two Pro Bowlers since Josh Allen in 2018

Beane, after this season’s trade deadline, said, “I’ve been to the Super Bowl a couple times. I’ve seen us be in AFC championship games. You don’t get to AFC championship games without having a championship roster.”

But after six one-score playoff losses in nine years, including blunders like the 13-seconds game, team owner Terry Pegula decides it’s McDermott’s time to go.

So what’s next? Well, two-thirds of that triumvirate remain—the head coaching search will be led by Beane, one that’ll need to capitalize on a window that stars one of the league’s best in Allen.
