ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The 1199 SEIU Healthcare Workers Union honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy with its annual celebration at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The event included music, dance, and speeches; one of the speakers was Robert Brooks Jr.
One of the speakers was Robert Brooks Jr., an 1199 SEIU delegate. His father, Robert Brooks Sr., was beaten to death in a state prison in December 2024.
“It’s ironic because it’s Martin Luther King Day, and yes, yes, we honor a lot of change we have endured in the past, but it hurts me to say that in 2026 we’re still dealing with the same problems,” Brooks Jr. said.
“This year, like Larry said, I’ve been fighting not only for my father, but justice for everyone who doesn’t have the power or doesn’t have the son or father or cousin who will stand up,” he added.
Brooks and his family successfully lobbied for prison reform laws, which Gov. Kathy Hochul signed into law last month. This year, they are advocating for changes to restore humanity within prisons.
