Another NFL head coaching job is open. The Buffalo Bills have made the stunning decision to fire head coach Sean McDermott, according to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and others.
McDermott was the head coach of Buffalo for 9 seasons (2017-25). During that time, the Bills were the second-winningest team in the NFL. Under McDermott, Buffalo went 98-50 in the regular season. They were just 8-8 in the playoffs, however, failing to reach the Super Bowl.
Buffalo’s decision follows the Bills’ season-ending overtime loss at Denver on Saturday in the AFC Divisional Game. Over 8 postseason McDermott’s Bills lost 2 times in the Wild Card Game, 4 times in the Divisional Game and 2 times in the AFC Championship Game. The last 7 postseason appearances have been with Josh Allen at QB. Buffalo last missed the postseason in 2018, Allen’s rookie season.
McDermott, 51, figures to have plenty of coaching options for 2026 with numerous NFL head coaching jobs still open. So far this cycle, the New York Giants hired John Harbaugh and the Atlanta Falcons hired Kevin Stefanski.
Prior to Buffalo, McDermott was an assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles (2001-10) and Carolina Panthers (2011-16).
