And just like that, the Buffalo Bills head-coaching vacancy created by Sean McDermott’s dismissal might be the hottest gig available. You could probably make a case for the Baltimore Ravens being a more plum gig. But taking over a team quarterbacked by Josh Allen that has made the postseason in eight of its last nine years should have coaches pushing each other out of the way in order to land an interview for the position.
Sean McDermott finishes his Bills coaching career with a 98-50 overall record. Buffalo won five division titles under McDermott’s watch and had seven seasons with 10+ wins. So it’s not as if he did a bad job running the show out in Buffalo. However, the lack of postseason success ultinately did him in. McDermott finishes his coaching career in Buffalo with an 8-8 record in 16 playoff games. That simply isn’t good enough when you have a quarterback as talented and productive as Josh Allen.
The 2026 season will be one of change for the Bills. Not only are they set to open a new stadium, they’ll do so with a new head coach. This feels like a place to point out the Chicago Bears will travel to Buffalo to play the Bills next season. It just won’t feature a coaching matchup of Ben Johnson and Sean McDermott.
