Gabriel Landeskog’s absence has affected the Colorado Avalanche on and off the ice. Since being sidelined on Jan. 4, the team has suffered two regulation losses and one overtime loss. Additionally, Devon Toews was injured on Jan. 3, further impacting the team’s performance.
Landeskog has been around the team during his recovery. But his absence from the lineup has been felt.

“Our support system this year is completely different. I think we’re on a completely different level. Guys like that, Taser and Landy, it’s just the balance of everything. That’s kind of what you lose,” Cale Makar said.
The 33-year-old captain had six points in his last seven games before he collided with the goal post in the matchup against the Florida Panthers.

“He’s such a force out there. Plays responsible, plays both sides, and then obviously just an emotional and vocal leader for us on and off the ice.
“He’s still got a pretty good feel and pulse and checking in on guys and vice versa … I feel like you can’t say enough good things about Gabe. He’s got an aura about him and a presence about him. You kind of feel it radiate; it’s just kind of positive support,” Brock Nelson said.
How the Avalanche are doing without Landeskog and Toews
The Avs have a next-man-up mentality when injuries occur, but losing two highly skilled players throws the team’s balance off.
“He’s (Landeskog) a major part in both the locker room and on the ice. We just got to bear down and battle these weeks, where we’re not having him on the team, and just dig a little deeper and play good for him,” Victor Olofsson said. “When he comes back, I’m sure it’s going to be very positive for our group.”
The power forward and top defenseman cannot be replaced, and the team has struggled without them.
“You have key players out of the lineup, you’re going to need really good games from a lot of guys. Because everyone has to pick up the slack,” head coach Jared Bednar said. “Since they’ve gone out, we have a handful of guys that are struggling a little bit. Maybe some of it started before that, but it wasn’t as important as it is now. It’s get everyone refocused on the same page, and then we’re going to need guys to play well, and we’re lacking a little bit of that right now.”
Landeskog and Toews being out has negatively affected the team, as losing top players will do. But the Avs did not play well in the three losses.
“We had a tough road trip and lost both of them, so it was hard. We can still win without them, but miss them a lot on the ice and in the locker room,” Martin Necas said. “All of us weren’t that sharp last couple games, especially defensively and on breakouts. We can sharpen up, and once we’re going to have them back, it’s going to be huge.”
Toews (upper-body injury) skated separately from the team before practice on Sunday, alongside Joel Kiviranta, who has been week-to-week with a lower-body injury. Bednar said they are “making progress, but no specific time yet.”
Landeskog remains week-to-week but has not publicly been on the ice.
