Aleppo, clashes continue on Tishreen Dam front ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

Clashes have continued between the Syrian army and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) along the Tishreen Dam axis (eastern Aleppo governorate) since the morning of Sunday, 18 January, marking a new field escalation in the area.

A military source told Enab Baladi that the fighting has been accompanied by exchanges of shelling and the use of heavy weapons, noting that Syrian army units have deployed tanks and armored vehicles toward the dam’s surroundings as part of an ongoing military operation.

The source described the dam as a strategic site that government forces are seeking to seize within the broader operations underway in the east of the country.

SDF says it repelled attacks

In two separate statements issued on Sunday, the SDF said it had thwarted three attack attempts that it said were carried out on the Tishreen Dam front by armed groups affiliated with “Damascus factions,” with the participation of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).

According to the statement, the clashes resulted in the destruction of two tanks and an armored vehicle, as well as two military vehicles equipped with heavy machine guns, described as “DShK” and “Trix” heavy machine gun adding that fighting is still ongoing on the same axis.

In another statement, the SDF said it had inflicted “painful blows” on the attacking groups as they attempted to advance toward Tishreen Dam and its surrounding countryside, claiming dozens were killed and wounded among those groups.

It added that it destroyed a number of cars and armored vehicles used in the assault, saying the events came as part of “confronting repeated attempts to destabilize security in the area.”

Commenting on the SDF statements about repelling an attack on the dam, the military source told Enab Baladi that these statements fall within the SDF’s media policy, especially in light of what he described as losses and withdrawals by its fighters.

He said the aim was to project that the force remains on the offensive and capable of holding its ground, despite military setbacks on the ground.

The source added that “the field reality differs from what is stated in the statements,” pointing to continued clashes and shifting front lines around the dam since the morning hours.

SDF fighters remain positioned around Tishreen Dam on the Euphrates River, on its western bank, despite the group’s earlier announcement that it had withdrawn its forces to the east of the river.

Rapid developments

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi announced on Friday, 16 January, a decision to withdraw his forces from the contact lines in eastern Aleppo toward the east bank of the Euphrates River. However, rapid developments over the past two days, including the Syrian army’s capture of the city of Tabqa and the Euphrates Dam (southwestern Raqqa governorate), have contributed to an escalation on the ground.

The Syrian army’s Operations Command announced on Saturday, 17 January, that it had taken control of Deir Hafir and Maskanah (eastern Aleppo governorate).

The army seized areas on the western side of the Euphrates after taking Tabqa and the Euphrates Dam, south of Raqqa, following several hours of clashes at dawn on Sunday, 18 January.

Fighting is also underway between tribal and local fighters in Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, and al-Hasakah (west of the Euphrates), without any direct announcement that the Syrian army has entered operations on the river’s western side.
