Get ready Chicago – the bitter cold is making a return. Expect extremely chilly conditions beginning this weekend as temperatures drop into the single digits, wind chills fall lower and multiple rounds of snow arrive.
Saturday kicked off with temperatures in the low to mid teens, and windy conditions made it feel much colder outdoors.
Breezy northwesterly winds will cause wind chill values to remain in the low single digits throughout most of the day while high temperatures will only top out in the low 20s, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack said.
Light snow showers are possible across the region, with totals ranging between half an inch to one inch.
By 9 p.m. this evening, if you’ll be outdoors at all, prepare for it to be even chillier. Wind chill values will dip into the low single digits and drop to zero overnight. By Sunday morning, they could reach negative seven degrees, Sack said.
The frigid cold will persist as the day gets off to a start.
Temperatures will drop into the single digits to around the low teens, though wind chill values will remain below zero. Wind chills will ease slightly by around noon, NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologists said.
A round of snow is expected beginning in the afternoon, with snowflakes anticipated during the Bears’ game. Temperatures, meanwhile, will be around the 20-degree mark.
With snow likely falling at the 5:30 p.m. kickoff time, temperatures will be in the low teens, and wind chill values will sit around zero. Breezy westerly winds – with gusts of around 14 miles per hour – will keep the ball moving around.
Snow will be on and off throughout the game, and readings may be warming a degree or two, but you won’t likely feel any difference, Sack said. The reason – feels-like temperatures will remain around zero.
Snow totals could reach two inches by Monday morning, with the latter half of the snowfall occurring on Sunday.
Snow will begin to taper off as the workweek begins, but the extreme cold will begin to ramp up.
Lows will be around zero, while wind chill values could dip as low as 10 to 20 degrees below zero, Sack said. Despite sunshine, temperatures will only be in the single digits.
Cold conditions won’t let up immediately, with chilly weather expected to persist through the week.
Another system dives its way in early Wednesday, bringing a chance for a bit of light snow. Thursday and Friday, meanwhile, look very cold, Sack said.
Wednesday will be the warmest day of the week as highs approach the 30-degree mark.
