SAN CLEMENTE — San Clemente held onto its share of the top spot in the South Coast League standings by beating San Juan Hills 88-66 on Friday at San Clemente High.
The Tritons (13-9, 3-0) are tied for first place in the league standings with Tesoro, which is also 3-0 in league after a dominant win over Dana Hills on Friday.
Both teams have beaten the other three teams in the league once and will play each other for the first time Wednesday at Tesoro High.
“We have kind of been taking things one game at a time and every game has been tough,” San Clemente coach Landon Pluimer said. “Tesoro will be good. They have a lot of veterans back and we have a mostly new team this year, but I think we are starting to gel a lot in these last couple of games. If we play hard and dominate the boards, I like our chances against anyone.”
Pluimer’s belief that San Clemente is starting to gel is backed by the team’s six-game winning streak and the way the Tritons played in the second half Friday.
San Clemente outscored San Juan Hills (12-10, 2-2) by 20 points in the second half despite trailing at one point in the third quarter.
The Tritons allowed 25 points to San Juan Hills in the second quarter but allowed only three Stallions players to score in the second half.
“We played a lot better defense,” Pluimer said. “They are a really good shooting team so they got hot. We did a better job staying on top of them, went on a little run and split the game open.”
San Clemente’s offense was excellent as well. The Tritons’ 88 points are the most they have scored since the season-opener when they scored 93 points against Costa Mesa.
Bryan Blake led San Clemente with 25 points including 18 in the first half. He made all eight of his free throw attempts and made three 3-pointers.
“It felt great to be in the home arena and play as a team. It was the best game of the season so far,” Blake said. “I felt good but it wasn’t just me, it was everyone.”
San Clemente led 38-36 at halftime and trailed early in the third quarter.
The Tritons ended up outscoring San Juan Hills 26-16 in the third to build a 12-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Tritons made 67 percent of their 3-point shots in the second half and had 26 points in the paint in the half compared to four points for the Stallions.
Desi Gutierrez had 18 points and 12 rebounds for San Clemente. Andrew Stakston 15 points with seven rebounds and Braeden Baggs scored all of his nine points in the second half while playing with four fouls.
Garrett Brehmer kept the Stallions in the game with his scoring. He had 30 points Friday after tallying a career-high 31 points on Wednesday against Tesoro. Brehmer made five 3-pointers and had seven rebounds.
“He got hot and he’s not only a good shooter, he’s a good driver,” Pluimer said of Brehmer. “It’s tough to defend because we don’t want him to drive but we still have to contest him. He’s a good player.”
Rocco Jensen had 16 points for the Stallions and Kellen Owens added nine.
San Juan Hills will play Dana Hills on the road next Friday, Jan. 23. The Stallions beat Dana Hills 64-58 on Jan. 7.
