Illinois is hosting Iowa and Nebraska for a two-day Big Ten double dual meet this weekend. Tonight kicked off with a very limited group of events. Day 1 featured only the 400 medley relay, 1000 free, 100 IM, and 400 free relay.

Illinois drew first blood, winning the 400 medley relay in 3:46.20. Sophia Paduano (56.94), Kayla Duran (1:02.17), Sophia Yousuf (56.59), and Maggie Adler (50.50) combined to get the job done. That Illini relay actually could have been a touch faster, as Chloe Diner split 1:01.71 on the Illinois ‘A’ relay, which was actually their 2nd-fastest relay.

Moving past the medley relay, Nebraska star Gena Jorgenson claimed a dominant victory int he 1000 free. Jorgenson, the 6th place finisher in the 1650 free at last year’s NCAA Championships, clocked a 9:55.77 en route to winning the 1000 by 22 seconds tonight. Nebraska had a very strong showing in the 1000 overall, as Riley Miklos came in 3rd with a 10:18.16, while Alaira Hadford was 4th in 10:21.31.

Illinois was back on top again in the 100 IM, where Chloe Diner put up a very speedy 55.80. Diner won the race by well over 2 seconds. She was out fast, splitting 25.70 on the opening 50. Diner holds the Illini program record with a 55.32. Iowa’s Olivia Swalley and Nebraska’s Beatrix Tanko tied for 2nd with times of 58.19 each. Illinois had a very nice showing in this event overall, seeing Sophia Yousuf take 4th with a 58.78, and Adelaide Reaser come in 6th with a 59.43.

The Hawkeyes ended the night on a high note, taking the 400 free relay by over a second. Payton Flowers (52.11), Audrey Olen (51.35), Rachel Dildine (51.20), and Jenna Kerr (50.87) teamed up for a 3:25.53. Nebraska’s Beatrix Tanko had the fastest split in the field tonight, anchoring the Nebraska ‘A’ relay in 50.44.
