A teenager was arrested in New York and charged with murder in connection to the killing of a 17-year-old west suburban high school student last week.
According to the Town of Cicero, the suspect, who was arrested Thursday, is being held on charges of first degree murder and aggravated battery with a fireman. He is now awaiting extradition back to Illinois, with additional charges upon his return, a release from the town said.
About 3:20 p.m. on Jan. 8, Cicero police responded to a call of a shooting victim in the 2100 block of South 59th Avenue, about a half-mile from Morton East High School. When officers arrived, they found the victim, Johan Adarve Sanchez, 17, unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Sanchez, a Morton East High School student, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
According to Cicero officials, an investigation revealed the shooting took place during a “large fight between two rival groups of teenagers.” Witness statements and video collected at the scene led investigators to determine the suspect, who is not a student at Morton East, shot Sanchez and fled on foot.
The suspect, also 17, then left the firearm in a nearby yard. It was later recovered.
The suspect was identified by several witnesses, police said. Officials attempted to contact him, but he had already fled to New York.
Thursday, after receiving an approved arrest warrant from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, investigators obtained evidence from Amtrak police that showed the suspect had purchased a train ticket to leave New York City for Chicago the same day.
Detectives coordinated with Amtrak police to locate the suspect and took him into custody without incident.
Prior to the arrest, school officials said there have been erroneous reports about details of the shooting, and cautioned the public to not spread false information.
“We are aware that there are many reports circulating on social media that are inaccurate. We ask that everyone please refrain from sharing unverified information at this time and rely only on official updates,” the school said in a statement.
“Our focus remains on supporting Johan’s classmates and our entire school community during this difficult time,” the school added.
