'80s Rock Icon, 74, Says a Johnny Cash Duet Left Him ‘Totally Humiliated’ ...Saudi Arabia

The incident took place in 1995, when Mellencamp participated in a special event marking the opening of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland. The event featured performances by several major artists, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, ArethaFranklin and the Kinks. Mellencamp was scheduled to perform a duet with Johnny Cash, an experience he discussed during a Wednesday, January 14, appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience.

“We were standing around getting ready to do soundcheck and there was a whole bunch of people playing,” Mellencamp, 74, began. “The Eagles were on soundchecking and they were taking forever because Don Henley is a perfectionist. Everything's got to be just right. And I was standing with John [Cash] and June [Carter Cash] and John was getting irritated because we were like 40 minutes [late].”

Mellencamp explained that he told Cash that “maybe he should see that guy,” and Cash replied, “Oh yeah, you will.”

When it came time to actually perform the soundcheck, the “Jack & Diane” singer said that he knew Cash was irritated. The two were only set to perform “Ring of Fire” together and because Cash was already annoyed by being there for so long, Mellencamp told him he knew the song and they didn’t need to do a soundcheck for it.

“He started the song. ‘I fell into…’ I didn't realize that he had changed the f--king key from him smoking to a lower key. So I couldn't hit the note,” Mellencamp explained. “I couldn't find a f--king note because it was not the note the song was written in.”

“All these people on the side of the stage, right? And they're all giving me a look like, ‘You're f--king up, man,’” Mellencamp continued. “As soon as the song was over, I ran off stage. I was totally humiliated. So, I ran off stage and got to my trailer. I just get back there and all of a sudden, knock on the door and I answer and it's John. He said, ‘Can I come in?’ And I go, ‘I don't know why you'd want to, but yeah, come on in.’ He goes, ‘I told you we should have soundchecked.’”

And in the end, the “Hurts So Good” singer did eventually make a trip to visit the “guy in London” who allegedly helped Cash quit smoking, but his tactics weren’t what Mellencamp expected.

“Here was his solution for not smoking,” Mellencamp said. “He gave me a good talking to. That was it. I was smoking on the way back home to Indiana.”
