The 95-year-old man who was killed in a crash that occurred while he was looking underneath his vehicle after it stalled in the middle of a northwest suburban road was identified by authorities Thursday.
The victim was identified as 95-year-old Richard A. Krzysztofiak of Palatine, the Lake County Coroner’s Office announced.
He died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash, authorities said.
Around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Krzysztofiak was driving westbound on Lake Cook Road just east of Quentin Road in Deer Park when his vehicle broke down in the center lane, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.
Witnesses reported the man exited his car and started looking underneath the engine area, authorities said. While he was under the car, a vehicle headed westbound on Lake Cook Road struck his vehicle from behind.
Around 3:30 p.m., several emergency vehicles blocking traffic in the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Quentin Road in Deer Park on aerial footage captured by NBC’s Sky 5 helicopter. Two crashed vehicles were visible alongside an ambulance, fire truck and several emergency responders.
The 30-year-old driver was transported to a local hospital alongside a 30-year-old woman from Arlington Heights who was a passenger in his vehicle, authorities said. Both were initially listed with non-life-threatening injuries.
A passenger in the stalled vehicle, a 77-year-old woman from Barrington, was also taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
