Chicago Bears fans are passionate, sticking with the team through thick and thin, but one fan stood above the rest this season.
Jonathan Otten was the winner of this season’s official title of ‘Bears Fan of the Year.’ He thought he was interviewing for the role at the start of the season.
Shortly after the meeting started, Bears rookie tight end Colston Loveland popped up on the screen.
“I just want to let you know man, congrats on being Fan of the Year,” he said.
Otten was visibly stunned and overjoyed. NBC 5 caught up with him Thursday ahead of the Bears playoff game weekend.
“It was like shock, and then he told me and I was like… it was the best,” he said.
Otten is a U.S. Navy Veteran and served as a submarine officer for nearly nine years. While on the USS Michigan Submarine he sported his Bears gear, including a Bears Santa hat for Christmas Day, rooting for the team even under the sea.
But perhaps the most shocking part, and a true indicator of Otten’s dedication and loyalty to the Bears, is that he lives in Detroit.
“Throughout my entire life, even rooted in Lions’ country, it was always the Bears,” he said.
Now he’s raising three young Bears fans, even states away.
As Fan of the Year, he receives two Super Bowl tickets, and now hopes he’ll be watching the Bears at the big game.
“I’ll be at the Super Bowl, (and) my Super Bowl plans are to watch the Chicago Bears,” he said.
Otten will also face off against other teams Fans of the Year for the ‘NFL Fan of the Year’ title.
