ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With the rate of snowfall the Rochester area saw Thursday, Rochester and nearby towns have implemented a strategy to prioritize plowing main roads before moving on to neighborhoods and side streets.
Karen St. Aubin, the Commissioner of Environmental Services, who runs the snow plowing operation in the city, explained the process.
“We start with our main roads. As soon as the snow begins to fall, as soon as the roads need treatment, we’re out there 24/7,” St. Aubin said. “After three inches of snow has fallen, we move into our residential roadways,” she added.
Comparing plowing maps from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the maps showed a noticeable increase in plowed streets by the afternoon Thursday.
Paul Travis, a lifelong Rochester resident, shared his perspective on the plowing schedule.
“Got to be patient with it. I don’t know why they don’t come and do the streets,” Travis said.
In Greece, Cory Gurnett, the Commissioner of the town’s Public Works, outlined their approach, which is like the City of Rochester’s rules.
“Our main roads take priority. Our mains and our secondaries take priority,” Gurnett said.
The town follows a guideline based on the amount of snow, typically moving into neighborhoods after three inches have accumulated.

St. Aubin mentioned that residents would begin to see plows on residential streets by 1 p.m. The plow tracking maps showed the progress, with streets plowed in the morning and afternoon clearly marked.
